January 8, 1993: At the Palatine police station Fred Leo would not receive encouragement from
his father’s company but a threatening phone call. “Do not go on television. I warn you.” To which
Fred Leo replied, “It seems everyone has forgotten that it is my name on that sign.” The threat
continued, “If you go on, you will pay.” Fred Leo hung up and walk into the press conference.
The Chicago Tribune would state:
“. . . Fred Brown, son of the (Brown’s Chicken) chain’’s founder ...,
appeared at the Palatine police station Saturday afternoon hoping
to offer help to the victims’ families. “It’s Vietnam all over again,”
said Brown, a Vietnam veteran who owns four Chicago area
Brown’s stores. “This gets me in my gut. I’m very sorry.”
His analogy to Vietnam was more accurate than he thought.
Betrayal for all his loyalty was close behind. Book published in
