had hardly a dime but they had
smiles on their faces and

John and Belva had both lived through the depression era so were conditioned to
the harsh realities of life. They also knew that if they wanted a home, they would
have to build it with their own two hands. So that’s what they did along with the
help of local farmers and Belva’s brother. John Brown was a good man as shown
in picture at right with him holding his oldest daughter Roxanna. There was a
peacefulness in the man that can only come from having lived a harsh life.

Mother’s Day of that year when they
sold 2,200 chickens. Ten year old
Fred Leo fondly remembers that
day. “There was a feeling of
achievement in the air. Like you
had been part of something great.”
