June 15 1986: Vietnam
Welcome Home Parade and
Vietnam Veterans Moving
Memorial came to Chicago. It
planted a seed in Fred Leo
that he needed to tell his story.
A month later he showed up at
the Green Mill Lounge (an
1920’s “Speak Easy” that
“Scareface” Al Capone
frequented) on Open
Microphone Tuesday for
Poetry Slam competition.
April 13, 1988: Poster top left used at local college for poetry reading.
May 6, 1990: Photo top right with daughter Kathryn at the Glenwood, ILL, for first
“Lessons of War” performance.
May 26, 1991: Newspaper left. Lansing Veterans All Wars Memorial was his
first serious reenactment.
1992 - Poster bottom right. He worked the poetry
circuit until he became a finalist in a prestigious
Chicago Poetry Slam in which he placed second. The
winner’s girlfriend was a judge. His welcome had been
wore out. Time to saddle-up and move on.
1994 Memorial Day:
